Camera Obscura w/ Papercuts
Wednesday Nov 25th, 8pm
German House, 315 Gregory Street, Rochester NY 14620
$15 advance all ages, $17 at the door
http://www.myspace.com/cameraobscuraband
Camera Obscura is known for being able to make a fractured heart seem beautiful. The band’s entire body of work, told through the tender, melancholy vocals of Tracyanne Campbell, captures the absurdities of love and revels in them. Since its first release in 1996, the Scottish indie-pop group has delivered a boundless sound, merging the world of pop with a dash of Motown, blues, and jazz. The group has released four albums to date; its U.S. tour has only a few brief stops before the band heads off to a second tour in Australia and New Zealand. Catch ‘em while you can. –Rochester City Newspaper
After party at Dragonfly, 725 Park Ave. Show your ticket to receive one free drink and the enjoy the vinyl with DJ’s Ginnis and Flipsicle.

Today Gaylord is the genre melding prog-pop-indie-funk trio that is quickly becoming one of the most sought after bands around. Their eclectic & progressive style has allowed them to gather a devout flock of fans and musicians from across seemingly disparate genres. –Rochester City Newspaper

Reggae Dance Party w/ DJ Ronnie Stackman
Saturday Nov 28th, 9pm
Abilene Bar and Lounge, 153 Liberty Pole Way, Rochester, NY 14604
When it comes to reggae, everyone could learn a thing or two from Rochester musician Ron Stackman. As co-founder/lead singer of pioneering reggae band, Bahama Mama, Ron went on to form The Majestics, who worked with legendary reggae artist Lee Scratch Perry, as well as supporting Burning Spear and Peter Tosh. By the 1990’s, Stackman would form the popular 9-piece band, Big Roots, and maintain his place as one of our area’s most authentic performers.
Now trying something a little different, Stackman will be taking the controls of the music at Abilene Bar & Lounge on Friday, November 14th, as he carts over his turntable, amps, speakers, and some of his impressive vinyl collection to spin the best in roots-reggae. “In Jamaica, the guy who chooses the music is ‘The Selector,’ not the DJ, and that’s what I’ll be,” says Stackman. –Freetime Magazine
This weekend’s show picks
Friday, November 13th, 2009So many shows this month, especially this weekend! Here are my recommendations:

String of Pearls w/ Hinkley
Abilene Bar and Lounge
Friday 11/13
6:00pm
free
Hinkley is an indie-folk rock band from Rochester. The band’s influences run deep in traditional American music but are often likened to contemporary independent artists such as The Shins, Sparklehorse and Wilco.

Anberlin w/ The Sunstreak and Nocturnal Me
The Club at Water Street
Saturday 11/14
8:00pm
$13 adv / $15 dos
Anberlin is a Tooth and Nail-turned-Universal band from Orlando. Their first cd, Blueprints for the Black Market, got me hooked. Their music is catchy and poppy, and the singer’s voice will amaze you.
The Sunstreak is a Rochester rock-pop band who has been busy touring on the Warped Tour and with bands like Saves the Day, Underoath, and Hellogoodbye for the past four years.

No plans this weekend? Here are my show picks.
Friday, October 9th, 2009Friday 10/9 – Happy Hour w/ Greg Townson, @ Bug Jar 6 pm
Catch the Hi-Risers singer at the Bug Jar before their tour of Spain this winter.
Saturday 10/10 – Cavalcade, Devall Music @ Boulder Coffee Co. Brooks Landing 7 pm
Cavalcade, a jammy Rochester favorite, plays at the newest Boulder Coffee location with Fingerlakes folk-roots-rock band Devall Music.
Sunday 10/11 – Every Time I Die, Bring Me The Horizon, Oh, Sleeper, Architects @ Water Street Music Hall 7pm
Yeah, I know ETID isn’t a Rochester local band, but they are Buffalo natives, and are f-ing awesome. Let’s show these boys that Rochester appreciates face-melting, yet fun, hardcore rock.
